Med School
Brian entered Wayne State’s School of Medicine after completing his undergrad degree. Mary completed her BA in Nutrition and headed to the University of Illinois in Chicago to earn her Masters degree.

He graduated from Medical school in 1986 with a focus on Internal Medicine.
A Married Man

Brian and Mary’s wedding was held June21, 1986 at St. Mary’s in Detroit,
mere weeks after his Med School graduation He had to be in Atlanta by the following Monday to start his residency in Internal Medicine at Emory University Hospital (pictured below).
They left for Atlanta the next day and their car broke down in Kentucky. Mary had to stay with the car, opening wedding cards and hoping for cash gifts to pay for the car repairs! In those days, it was impossible to get a credit card without established credit, which neither of them had. Brian was forced to go on without her, as the start date for his residency had already been delayed a week for their wedding! They eventually got settled in Atlanta. Mary worked as a dietician at the VA Hospital during their time there.

The next step in Brian’s training found him at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis for a three year fellowship in Hematology and Oncology
Mary worked as a dietician at the same hospital.

A Hew Home and a “Real” Job
The Murphys moved to Huron, Ohio after he completed the fellowship in Indiana. They chose this beach town, and the neighborhood of Chaska Beach, as their new home, and have resided their ever since.

Brian got what he calls his first “real job” as an oncologist in Sandusky with Sandusky Internists, which was later named North Coast Cancer Care. They built their cancer center in 2007 (pictured below), then joined the Cleveland Clinic in 2011. One of his partners, Phil Engeler and his wife Maureen became some of Brian and Mary’s closest friends. Their children became close friends with the Murphy children as well. Mary has worked as a dietitian throughout their time in Ohio, and currently works with children at the county “Help Me Grow” program. She spent many years as a high school youth minister at their church in Huron (Saint Peter’s), and is now a Spiritual Director.

A New Generation of Murphy Girls
Brian and Mary have four daughters.

All the girls attended St. Peter Elementary school in Huron and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Sandusky. After high school, however, they each sought a different path. More to come! The girls grew up at the beach!
Chaska Beach
The Chaska Beach neighborhood owns and maintains a private beach that is for use by residents and their guests. A good guess would be that almost every person in the Murphy (North) clan has walked on this beach and taken a swim in Lake Erie many times. They also have used it to go tubing, boating, skiing, and all other kinds of water activities!

We Need More Room! The Murphy Bed

In 2010, Brian and Mary realized that their house was overflowing. There was a vacant lot next door to them that they used for games, such as volleyball and cornhole, as well as many others. Next to the lot was another house that was sitting empty. The vacant lot was part of that property. When the house came up for sale, they bought the whole thing. Brian was concerned that the lot would be sold separately and a new house would be built on their “playground.” They name the new house “The Murphy Bed.”
Many family members and friends have enjoyed Brian and Marys’ generosity of sharing their “spare” home. Huron and Chaska Beach have been a favorite summer spot for the entire Murphy North Clan ever since the Murphys moved there, and the Murphy Bed made it that much more inviting.
Murphy Girls’ Weekend
For quite a few years, the Murphy sisters from Mickey’s family, as well as daughters-in-law Lori, Sue, and Mary, and one of the “original” Murphy Girls – Aunt Eileen, and some of her daughters have gathered at the Murphy Bed each summer to celebrate their Murphyness.
